Hier bei Jan'n June verwenden wir zwei verschiedene Baumwollen: Biologische und recycelte Baumwolle. Heute dreht sich alles um recycelte Baumwolle. Let's go!
Recycling process
First, we need raw material, which is either pre or post consumer waste. Pre-consumer waste: fabric from dead stock, production leftovers, offcuts Post-consumer waste: includes garments, upholstery, towels, household items to be repurposed (everything that has been with the consumer already) To recycle cotton mechanically, the fabrics and/or clothing get sorted by colour. Then, the sorted pieces get shredded into small pieces before being spun into new yarns. It is not uncommon for the fibers to break during this process, since it is pretty harsh. Therefor usually virgin fibers are added so the yarn gets more stable.Problems with cotton recycling
A lot of companies don't think about recycling when they design and produce their clothing. Even a small amount of spandex or polyester can make a cotton-product non-recyclable. Fortunately, recycling process is getting better and better and we think soon this is not going to be an issue anymore. Let's face it: we can fly to the moon but cannot recycle mixed yarns properly. That has to change at some point!JAN 'N JUNE and recycled cotton
As you've just learned, the recycled cotton is exposed to a lot during recycling process and the recycled version will never have the same quality as virgin (organic) cotton. Since we want long-lasting high-quality products, we use partly virgin cotton in our recycled pieces. This is how we keep quality high. As previously mentioned this gives more strength to the yarn. Sadly, we still aren't 100% happy with the fabric. Because we don't like the fact that there is no possibility to combine recycled cotton with virgin organic cotton fibres. Normal virgin cotton is used. But we're on it and are really trying to convince our suppliers to work together. It seems that recycling industry and organic industry do not work hand in hand on this topic. In our new SS20 collection, you can find the scarf ROSS which is made out of 85% recycled cotton.
